  The language barrier

Keep in mind that most of the Hilltribe adults do not speak Thai, but most of the kids and teenagers do, as they attend Thai schools.

Although you can make the best efforts to learn the most words possible, you may feel upset and isolated because of the language barrier. Remember that there are many creative ways to communicate. Drawings, body language or just a simple smile can express what you want to say.

Be patient. You may have to try in several ways before making yourself understood.

Laughter is an international way to communicate; be smiley and don’t be afraid of mistakes.

People in the villages learn more and more English. But do not assume that they can understand everything you say. Simple broken English would be mandatory if you want to make sure that you understand each other.
