What to expect
when visiting a Hilltribe village

What to bring

Most of the Hilltribes villages do not have electricity or running water in their houses. Also, we strongly recommend bringing conservative and warm clothes. From October to March, nights can be quite cold in Northern Thailand.

Besides your standard luggage, (don’t bring too much! And bring it in a backpack!) here is a short list of things we recommend to bring during your stay in a Hilltribe village:

   • Bottles of water (please bring them back with you when leaving the village)
   • Torch, preferably a head torch
   • Spare batteries (don’t throw them away in the village!)
   • Sleeping bag
   • Unscented soap and deodorant
   • Mosquito repellent
   • Extra medication (it could be hard to find some in the villages)
   • Pictures of your family, friends, house and country (showing pictures of close people is always a great way to break the ice).

   • If you want to give gifts to your hosts or to children, please do not bring sweets, as the people may not have toothbrushes. Indeed, bringing toothbrushes, toothpaste as well as fruits, toys, balls, pens and pencils could be very useful gifts. Buying local handicrafts from the adults of the village is also a good way to help the community.

   • If you intend to take pictures of the villagers, after asking them their permission, we suggest that you ask their address or the address of the village leader so you can send the pictures to them by mail.
